Animal Chair Collection by Maximo Riera

Stunning, intricate and luxury – just that we can see a limited collection Animal Chair by Maximo Riera Studio. An extraordinary design of these chairs seems curious and provokes to the paradoxical emotions. But it’s hardly to say that such an unusual view of the furniture could be just a “designer’s trick”. And it’s hardly to define such a design as something impudent. Due to a perfect silhouette of elegance and an unprecedented aesthetics the Animal Chair Collection by Maximo Riera Studio has its own unique image.

An external shape of these chairs was inspired by the images of wonderful mammals, reptiles and even the insects. What is more fascinating that a unique “architecture” of the chairs? We can also see all the biological features of the animals and a “wild” play with the balance. Initially, a high quality leather in a deep black colour was used for the upholstering of all the objects. But the renewed edition has been produced since 2015. And it differs from the previous one by unique natural colours of the leather, creating a more realistic view.

Animal Chair Collection impresses us with the complicated and dynamic images, which reveal between the art and nature, creating amazing visual effects. These objects look like the “live sculptures”, as if an enormous “chair-animal” is going to make a step, to jump or to creep ahead.

The Hippopotamus Chair – “taming of the fury”

An external shape of the Hippopotamus Chair was inspired by one of the most aggressive and unpredictable creatures in the world. This chair keeps all the initial natural dimensions and “volumes” of a real hippopotamus. All the wrinkles and a “natural pattern” of their skin, as well as the features of the muzzle were reproduced very accurately. A seat is placed in one of the “hemisphere” of the hippo’s enormous body, which looks like a large barrel. The inner upholstery of the seat and the back is made with using capitonne. This detail completes the whole composition with an amazing elegancy. When we look at the Hippopotamus Chair, it seems like this “animal” is looking for something or smelling on the floor. A huge and dangerous, but in a state of the “taming fury” – such exactly a figure of the Hippopotamus Chair appears in the interior in our perception.

The Whale Chair – “the aquatic majesty”

How can we imagine a chair in a form of a real whale? It’s just enough to make a huge tail, and one can immediately guess what it is. The Whale Chair fascinates us because of its unique design, which is based on the unreal balance and plastic shapes. This composition is perfect in its uncompleted form and each detail completes a nice silhouette of a true grace. A shape of the tail is based on a “perfect asymmetry” and a natural dynamics. And the whole composition shows us a playful movement of a whale, which wagged its tail. Exclusive leather upholstering of this chair copies practically all the natural details of the real with a very realistic effect. The chair could be placed in the center of a large room due to its huge dimensions. A seat and a back of the chair have a triangular shape. An upholstery of a high quality leather is made with capitonne that completes the whole composition with a true beauty. This chair seems to appear from the depth of the ocean.

The Octopus Chair – “emerging from the depth”

The Octopus Chair is one of the most extraordinary, exquisite and remarkable objects of the Animal Collection by Maximo Riera Studio. It has an impressive and complicated composition and its own unique “architecture” which combines the “disgusting” tentacles and an amazing elegance in its best way. The front legs of this chair have a delicate curved shape, but we can see a lot of the tentacles at its back. This composition looks as if these tentacles are moving naturally on the floor. Such a realistic composition becomes possible because of a special internal frame, which holds the whole structure.

The upholstery of a seat and back is made with the elegant capitonne stitching. Not only the physiological features of the octopus but also some sublimity and arrogance of their movements are reproduced in the design of Octopus Chair. In spite of such a peculiar design an image of this object is not senseless: in accordance with designer’s idea this chair “is not a decoration”. A wonderful silhouette of this chair makes an effect of the one identity between the animal, chair and person. An image of this “chair-sculpture” can provoke us to the mixed emotions and conflicting opinions. But despite such an intricate view an expressing of a true elegance is unique and has a wonderful visual effect. In fact, the design of The Octopus Chair is out of our usual way we see this world or “nature of art and it is not so realistic as surreal”. The Octopus Chair design is beyond the design.

The Beetle Chair – enormous beetle

Design of The Beetle Chair was inspired by one of the largest insects in the world such as a rhinoceros beetle. This armchair becomes one of a few objects of the whole collection, whose dimensions are not the same as the proportions of its prototype. In fact, a rhinoceros beetle is much less smaller than its “copy” in a Maximo Riera version. It was a well-thought out idea to increase the natural proportions of the real beetle. As we know, male rhinoceros beetles have a distinctive feature. This is a bent horn, which helps them to lift any objects hundredfold heavier than their own weight. Proceeding from such a calculation the natural dimensions of a rhinoceros beetle were multiplied to one hundred. So, a majestic armchair was created. A seat is placed in the inner side of the beetle’s back, and the massive superior wings serves as the cozy and comfortable side elements. Upholstering of the seat and back is made with the capitonne technique.

The Walrus Chair – “a cozy walrus”

A wonderful design of The Walrus Chair was inspired by an image of some awkward sea mammal. It’s a walrus. A perfect composition and the massive volumes have a special significance for The Walrus Chair. This object is more likely a chaise longue, which fascinates us with its dimensions and a very naturalistic view. All natural details of the skin’s texture, for example some wrinkles, were reproduced very accurately. It seems like this “live” sculpture is moving slowly across the room as if the real walrus. A front part of its body is much more massive and it is slightly bent forward. That’s why we can see an amazing play with the balance, which becomes a certain peculiarity for The Walrus Chair design.

The Toad Sofa – it’s almost a toad

This armchair is cozy, comfortable, majestic and luxurious. And it’s almost a real toad, actually. This is another uncompleted composition in the Animal Collection by Maximo Riera Studio. We don’t see the whole body of a “prototype”, but anyone can guess what it is. The design of this armchair has a shape of a toad, actually it is toad’s beautiful back part, and its back legs look like are ready to jump. On the surface of its skin we can see a lot of “disgusting” warts and the other naturalistic details of its “skin texture”. A seat of The Toad Sofa has a round shape and it is fixed with two support elements. The upholstery of a seat and back is made with the capitonne stitching that creates a noble aesthetics of a natural toad, and completes the whole composition with a true elegance.

The Rhino Chair – “a wild grace”

The Rhino Chair is rather a throne than a chair. Its amazing balance reveals from a unique grace of this wild animal. The front legs of this chair have a delicate shape with carved details. But an enormous rhino’s muzzle serves as a back support element. It seems like a rhino is looking for something or smelling on the floor. A design of the Rhino Chair represents all the power and a “majestic nature” of this wild and dangerous animal. In fact just a few of us has ever seen a rhino face to face. As a rule it becomes possible to see this animal is in a zoo in a cage. That’s why a rhino’s muzzle became the main element of this object. It has a fascinating and scary image, which is typical for the rhinos in their native habitat.

The Elephant Chair – an imperceptible presence

The Elephant Chair impresses us with its unprecedented aesthetics. It has a unique composition and an amazing view. Can you imagine an imperceptible presence of an elephant in the room? How could it be possible? The Elephant Chair becomes a fascinated art-object, which shows us the whole majesty and a true beauty of this animal. All its natural details were reproduced very accurately, that creates a special visual effect.
The ethnic features of the Indian culture are also remarkable for The Elephant Chair design. All the decorative details and carved patterns were created in accordance with the style of the old Indian furniture. We can see a wooden grain texture and asymmetrical surfaces, which are typical for the hand crafted wooden objects. A seat is completed with the decorative pillows which have a cylindrical shape. All these details represent a special authentic atmosphere and a deep symbolic sense. A design of The Elephant Chair reveals from a synthesis of the natural images, craft arts and a special style, which is beyond any usual things.
