The Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” was a source of the inspiration for the Grimm Design Collective. Woodsman Axe Table became a winner of the Peta Levi Memorial Bursary 2010. A design of this table has an unusual construction.

We can see a traditional top, which has a rectangular shape. The blades of the axes are fixed at the corners of the top. And the handles of the axes serve as the “legs” of this table. The top is made of the Walnut or Oak, and handles of the axes (or the “legs” of the table) are made of the solid hickory. Woodsman Axe Table by Duffy London can be an extraordinary interior accent, which makes an emphasis on the “personality” of the furnishings.

A unique composition of the “constantly falling down table” actually “tickles” our perception. This construction reveals with an experiment with the balance and it has an impossible view because it practically breaks all the lows of physics. A large glass top has a rectangular shape and it is placed on the complicated sculptural base, which visually looks like the falling domino tiles. This quite massive slabs are made of the powder-coated mild steel (in black or white colour), or polished stainless steel. These blocks are leaned to each other as if they falling down before the crash. A special “visual shock” reveals from the combination of the materials, such as translucent glass and the massive steel slabs. The whole composition looks like “a permanent state of impending collapse”, as if the glass is going to fall and break.

The design of Abyss Table has a unique visual effect. It looks like a fragment of the sea abyss. An image of this extraordinary art-object is based on the balance between the “small and great”, between “the parts and the whole”. It reveals in a striking accuracy of the reproducing all the colour shades and the other details of the composition. On the whole the Abyss Table has a solid construction, which is made of the glass and high grade wood. As if these materials are integrated to each other. A visual effect of a three-dimensional image appears due to a complicated layered structure of the wooden base.

The glass differs by a fascinating colour graduation, which exactly copies a natural richness of the deep blue colour of the sea. As we can see, this table looks like a casual fragment of the geological cross-section. The composition has its own depth and gives us an amazing visual illusion – “as mesmerizing as the sea”. Certainly, Abyss Table by Duffy London becomes an exclusive accent of the modern interiors. Interestingly, that the extraordinary tables by Duffy London, such as Megalith Table and Abyss Table are limited to 25 editions.
