Sometimes there are amazing mutations in the world of design. For example, some furniture can grow organically, or it can be “the result of a chemical or nuclear reaction”. Mutation Series by Maarten De Ceulaer appeared as if it was some fancy bacteria.
“The pieces in this series look like they weren’t made by hands”. Unique shapes of the sofas or chairs seem to be futuristic or surreal.
As if these objects were created without thinking about some rational aesthetics, but in spite of this the external shape surprises us and it becomes recognizable. As though “mutated” sofas of chairs were created in laboratory or as if they have grown to their present form organically by cell fission and cell multiplication.
We can see a lot of spherical elements with various dimensions and proportions. It is about a free, spontaneous and maybe chaotic combination, or a “complicated molecule”. It is very difficult to reproduce such a special structure. So, each “mutated” object is unique.
In spite of an extraordinary aesthetics, Mutation Series has its own stylistic complexity. It is about “highly contemporary” shapes in which we can see an experimental image of the classical “Chesterfield” upholstery.
“The famous and iconic deep buttoned” upholstery is similar to some strange sculpture. So, Mutation Series has its own unprecedented aesthetics and a special elegancy, which is hidden behind “the first impression”.
Mutation chairs with very thin legs have a special charm and a unique silhouette, which is based on an amazing touch of lightness. These chairs seem to be some subtle clouds, or some amazing molecules.
Mutation Series by Maarten De Ceulaer becomes one of those modern design culminations which are beyond any usual things. It is out our usual way we see the nature ot things, levering all sides of ordinary and even numbed traditions…
